Join Skills Development Scotland as a Modern Apprentice!

Are you a young person looking for an exciting opportunity to kickstart your career? Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is offering a 2-year fixed-term Modern Apprenticeship SCQF Level 6 in Software Development as part of our Young Talent Programme.

About the Role:

This role is designed to support SDS's ambitions to increase the uptake of Modern Apprenticeships, especially among young people from underrepresented groups such as ethnic minorities and individuals with disabilities.

Mentored and supported within the Digital Development team, you will both learn and contribute to the various in-house products and services to meet the needs of the customer.

SDS embraces agile working, therefore, location is flexible. However, there will be a requirement for regular travel to Glasgow where the team is based for training, mentoring and team collaboration. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will support work on the highly acclaimed My World of Work site and Apprenticeships.scot.
  • You will gain a wider understanding of the business and digital development by working closely with the insight team, content producers, data specialists and designers to produce digital solutions. 

About You:

We are looking for someone who is passionate about software development and enjoys working with others. You should have good interpersonal skills, a creative approach to problem-solving, and be confident in sharing your ideas. You should also be organised and have a good level of IT skills, ideally including working with Microsoft programmes and using the web.

Most importantly, you must be willing to learn, develop your skills, and have the drive and determination to complete your Modern Apprenticeship.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for this role, you must be aged 24 or younger on 8 September 2025, in line with the Scottish Government’s initiative on youth employment. However, SDS will be flexible on age criteria for applicants who identify as care experienced or disabled in which case candidates must be 29 or younger on 8 September 2025.

Interviews are expected to be held week commencing 7th July 2025.  We are piloting a new approach to recruitment for this role, if your application is successful and you are invited to interview, you will be issued with the interview questions in advance to help you prepare and do your best at interview. More information will be made available if you are invited to interview.

The anticipated start date for successful candidates is 25th August 2025.
